The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo calls on MEC for Health Phophi Ramathuba to urgently address the issue of freely roaming stray cats and terrible conditions in the Tshilidzini Hospital Maternity ward.

The undignified circumstances under which babies are being delivered in Tshilidzini Hospital were exposed after the DA learnt about the stray cats that roam freely in the ward and eat leftover food from dirty plates that are left in the ward.

The DA is deeply concerned about the parasites the cats may carry as well as the potential diseases and bacterial infections they may cause, especially in a hospital environment with infants and patients with weakened immune systems. These cats need to be removed and placed in a safe environment.

The Hospital also has dilapidated infrastructure, worn out bedding and curtains as well as a generally unclean environment where used plates and floors go for long periods without being cleaned.

Hospitals should keep to the highest hygiene standards and maintain a high standard of cleanliness to ensure effective infection prevention. MEC Ramathuba must intervene to ensure that patients at Tshilidzini Hospital receive dignified healthcare.

The DA will continue to hold the Limpopo Health Department accountable for the neglect of our public health facilities and the disregard for the patients in Limpopo that use them. The people of Limpopo deserve quality healthcare.
