Issued by Cllr. Yolande Coetzee – DA Councillor: Mogalakwena Municipality

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mogalakwena Municipality has formally written to the municipality’s Chief Financial Officer, seeking urgent intervention regarding ongoing delays and serious inaccuracies in the issuing of rates clearance figures and certificates.

As the DA, we call for the full and proper functionality of the municipality’s finance department and the operationalisation of its core functions.

Property sales and transactions cannot be finalised without the settlement of outstanding municipal rates and service charges, and the issuing of rates clearance certificates by the municipality. Over the past few months, we have been inundated with complaints from attorneys, estate agents, and property owners about delays in receiving clearance figures, concerns over their accuracy (particularly in relation to sectional title properties), and further delays in the issuing of clearance certificates.

It appears the problem may stem from the integration or poor implementation of a new financial software system, with some residents reporting that their monthly accounts no longer reflect property rates due.

This is not just a technical issue. These delays are stalling property transactions, undermining economic activity, and negatively affecting the municipality’s already fragile revenue collection.

As the DA, we will continue to monitor this matter closely. We will not rest until the municipality delivers a responsible, accurate, and timeous service to residents and stakeholders alike.
