The DA in Limpopo has written to the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene, to urgently attend to the terrible condition of the George’s Valley road following another heavy vehicle accident on the R71 road.

George’s Valley road is used mainly by heavy vehicles but due to its deplorable state it has forced many heavy vehicles to use the R71 Magoebaskloof road instead.

The R71 road is notorious for its sharp corners, steep inclines and descent, which are unsuitable and dangerous for heavy vehicles and subsequently causes great risk for other motorists. Hardly a week goes by without a major accident on the R71 Magoebaskloof road.

This morning, a truck carrying gas cylinders, crashed causing explosions and a road closure for many hours. A few days ago, a heavy vehicle veered off the road and went over the rails. If the George’s Valley road is in a good condition, there is no reason why heavy vehicles, caravans, slow moving vehicles and vehicles carrying dangerous goods, should have to use the R 71.

The DA urges the MEC to prioritise upgrading the George’s Valley road that is currently in a bad and dangerous condition to avoid accidents and fatalities.
