DA persistence pays off as Kunap River bridge repairs underway

02 Oct 2025 in Press Statements

The DA in Limpopo welcomes the repairs on the Kunap River Bridge on the R518. This follows persistent pressure and follow ups by the DA on the condition of the bridge.

We have raised concerns around the condition of the bridge and the need for maintenance with the Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure (LDPWRI) since 2023. The bridge has three supporting pillars and the central pillar showed increasing signs that the base was being washed away. View photos here and here.

After another letter to the LDPWRI in March 2025 in which the Department was requested to urgently attend to the bridge, the complaint was forwarded to SANRAL, the responsible agency. Early in September 2025, work started and the progress is commendable. View photos here, here and here.

The contractor is currently on site and it is estimated that the repairs will be done within 2 weeks. Without SANRAL’s timely repairsthis vital bridge was at great risk of collapsing during the next rainy season.

The Kunap River bridge is widely used by residents, mines, and farmers to transport their goods to Gauteng and is vital to economic activity in the area and it is vital to ensure the maintenance of this essential infrastructure.

The DA is committed to ensuring that infrastructure is maintained to support economic development and ensure the safety of residents.
