The DA is calling on the Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality(CDM), Mamedupi Teffo, to urgently investigate the failed and inadequate water projects in Molemole municipality.
CDM in their legislated capacity as Water Service Authority (WSA) as well as Water Service Provider (WSP) to Molemole, has been implementing deficient water projects since 2018 in excess of R397 million.
Only one of the 16 wards in Molemole has regular access to piped water; most of the villages in the municipality still cannot access reliable water supply. (See photos here and here)
Residents from ward 13 have to walk for long distances to get water or wake up in the middle of the night to collect water from a single tap, only to return after midday.
Some residents buy water from those with boreholes, which add further strain on already strained budgets.
This is caused by sketchy new projects not providing water due to poor workmanship, broken machinery and delays in payment of Eskom accounts.
The municipality installed JoJo tanks in some villages as temporary measure to supply water but this failed too because the municipality does not follow their own schedules.
The lack of water supply to communities is dehumanising; access to water is a universal right, not just for wealthy and the political elite.
Residents will show their disdain for ANC-run municipalities’ inability to address dire kitchen table issues at the ballot box next year.
