The DA in Limpopo has engaged the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene, and noted with concern that the road to the Orpen gate of the Kruger National Park has been closed due to the bridge on the R531 being washed away on Sunday night. The bridge between Shimungwe Gate and the Wits Rural Facility has washed away completely and the R531 road has been closed until further notice. View photos and video herehere and here.

This situation is critical as this is one of the most important access roads from the larger Hoedspruit area to the Kruger National Park and it is also one of the most important tourism attractions in the area. The closure of the R531 negatively affects economic activity in the area and affects community members attending work and school.

The DA urges Rachoene and the department to prioritize this bridge as tourism as well as farming are the two most important economic sectors in the area and the R531 is pivotal to both. This road serves not only tourism but also the rural communities in that area.

The DA will follow up in the coming days and make sure that the repair of this bridge receives priority. Road users are encouraged to stay safe and use alternative routes. The people of Hoedspruit deserve safe infrastructure that facilitates socio-economic activities.
