The Democratic Alliance (DA)  in Limpopo calls on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to investigate the arrest of one of their members in a drug bust by the Groblersdal SAPS during which  17 bales of compressed cannabis enroute to Musina were confiscated.

On 12 May 2026, a 36-year old male, a 23 -year old female and a 33-year old male SAPS member from Carolina in Mpumalanga, were arrested following an intelligence-driven operation. The three suspects remain in custody.

Drug related crime in Limpopo is on the rise and this bust is a huge win for our communities.

The last available annual SAPS crime statistics indicate that there were 6833 drug related arrests due to police action, an increase of 24.1 percentage points from the previous year.

During the third quarter for 2025, drug related crime in Limpopo increased year-on-year by 3.4% percentage points in 12 months from 2566 to 2654.

It is concerning that we are losing the war against drugs and faith in SAPS following the arrest of own of their own.

The arrest of a police officer points to institutional rot within SAPS and must be investigated by IPID; the war on drugs demand credible and ethical policing.
