The DA in Limpopo will request the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Basikopo Makamu, to provide written reasons why his department has yet to intervene in the rapidly declining Molemole Local Municipality.
Since April 2026, 12 officials, have been arrested and subsequently suspended by council for corruption, including the R38 million Morebeng landfill project with little to no delivery; the Matseke electrification project where payments of approximately R2 million appear to have been made ahead of completion; the irregularly awarded R238,500 training tender; and the underperforming R7.5 million Fatima culvert bridge project.
Officials who were not arrested by the HAWKS but were members of the Bid Evaluation Committee and Bid Adjudication Committee were also suspended.
The municipality is currently under the management of officials in acting positions who do not have the necessary experience and/or qualifications and who did not write the mandatory competency tests; these appointments are procedurally flawed, which compromises good governance and can lead to a myriad of legal challenges.
Molemole municipality is fraught with poor road infrastructure and most wards have serious challenges around access to water. Basic services are non-functional.
It is clear that the acting team is in way over their heads and despite a written request to intervene by the DA on 20 April 2026; there has to date been no response from MEC Makamu .
It is clear that the communities of Molemole municipality are not a priority to MEC Makamu and the ruling party; continuous resignation, suspension and acting appointments are systemic failures in the municipality which hinders service delivery and seems to be a breeding ground for corruption – Your vote for the DA on 4 November 2026 can ensure effective service delivery.
