The Democratic Alliance (DA) has opened a criminal complaint with the NaboomspruitSouth African Police Service (SAPS) over the ongoing illegal removal of sand from the provincial D1069 road reserve leading to the Modimolle-Mookgophong landfill site, which is damaging and further weakening the already deteriorated road infrastructure.

The complaint was registered under CAS 98/6/2026.

For approximately the past year, certain individuals have allegedly been removing sand from alongside the road, steadily stripping away material that forms part of the road infrastructure and contributing to the deterioration of an already dilapidated road.

See here and here.

The DA is deeply concerned that this unlawful activity has been allowed to continue over a protracted period without effective intervention from the municipality, provincial authorities or SAPS. The theft of road-building material not only damages public infrastructure but also endangers motorists and other road users.

This incident forms part of a broader pattern of criminal activity that is destroying essential public infrastructure. We cannot allow continued lawlessness to result in the pillaging and damage of our roads, water infrastructure, electricity networks and other public assets.

The DA is unequivocal: this criminal activity must stop, and those involved must be caught and convicted. We must restore law and order.

We call on the relevant authorities to urgently assess the extent of the damage, take immediate steps to halt the unlawful activity, and rehabilitate and protect the affected road reserve.

The DA will continue to monitor the matter to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted and that this vital infrastructure is protected for the benefit of all road users.
