The DA in Limpopo has written to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to intervene over the severe and persistent water shortages in Buysdorp village, outside Vivo.

Water cuts are a frequent and recurring problem in Buysdorp. The community often goes without a drop of water for up to two weeks and this is a huge challenge to residents, livestock, small businesses and schools in the area.

Buysdorp residents have been suffering from water shortages and supply interruptions for many years due to Vhembe District Municipality’s (VDM) failure to provide water infrastructure in the area.

The area does not receive assistance from the municipality in the form of water tankers, leaving many areas without any water. This lack of a stable water supply is also hampering development that could create much needed jobs.

It is clear that the community of Buysdorp has been neglected and deprived of their right to have access to sufficient water. The DA has previously requested assistance from the municipality after residents complained about the lack of water infrastructure that prevents the supply of sufficient water but nothing has been done to deal with the issue.

VDM urgently needs to provide water tankers regularly to the area as an interim measure and begin a process to drill boreholes, build a water reservoir large enough for the Buysdorp community and provide water infrastructure like piping and pumps to supply water to all residents.

The DA will continue to fight for improved service delivery and the constitutional rights of the residents of Buysdorp.
