The DA in Limpopo has written to the Education MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, to urgently intervene and assist learners at Muvhavha Secondary School, in Tswinga village outside Thohoyandou, who are forced to learn under trees as the school crumbles due to no maintenance. The school has more than 600 learners and not enough classrooms to cater for the students. It is clear that the school is plagued by challenges such as poor infrastructure, overcrowding, dilapidated classroom furniture and a severe shortage of adequate resources.

Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, needs to urgently provide mobile classrooms to ensure that learners do not continue to learn under trees exposed to extreme weather conditions. The province’s department must prioritise addressing historical challenges in Limpopo’s Education system such as poor school infrastructure, overcrowding and inappropriate sanitation.

The challenge of billions of rands in school infrastructure backlogs and classroom shortages affects the quality of education our learners receive in Limpopo. The Limpopo Department of Education has failed these learners and educators by not fulfilling its own mandate, which is to provide a conducive environment for learning and teaching.

The DA believes that no child should have to learn under a tree, and all learners deserve a dignified learning environment.
