The DA will write to the Mopani District Municipal Manager, Tshepo Mogano, to urgently address the water crisis in Siyandhani Village, and account for the failure to provide clean water to the people of Siyandhani Village in Greater Giyani Municipality.
The Mopani District Municipality has failed to supply water from Mapuve Water Works and to deal with the water mafias hijacking the water supply from the bulk pipes. This is largely due to the lack of by-laws to deal with those that steal water and sell it to the community.
The failure by the municipality to drill and equip a borehole for the village has exacerbated the water challenges in the area. Community members cannot buy water at exorbitant prices and are forced to rely on water from the river that they share with animals for drinking, cooking, washing and bathing. Every financial year the district municipality budgets millions for water, but the village which is only eight kilometres away from the district offices has never benefited from water projects. The village has been excluded in all water projects since 2021 and in the 2025/26 Financial year an amount of R136 million is set aside for water reticulation from the Water Infrastructure Services Grant (WISG) for the Giyani Water project.
The DA will also engage the Technical Director and Water and Sanitation Director on their plans to address this water crisis faced by the village.
The DA is committed to holding municipal officials accountable and ensuring that the people of Siyandhani Village have access to clean drinking water.
