More than 17 years have passed since the launch of the Mametja-Sekororo Regional Bulk Water Scheme, yet thousands of residents across 28 villages in Sekororo are still waiting for access to clean, safe water. Despite R1.4 billion being poured into the project since it began in the 2008/09 financial year, critical phases remain incomplete, and the taps remain dry.
The DA in Maruleng Municipality is concerned by the persistent failure of the Mopani District Municipality to complete the Mametja-Sekororo Regional Bulk Water Scheme.
The DA has visited affected communities in the Sekororo area where residents continue to depend on unreliable, ageing, malfunctioning boreholes and untreated stagnant water sources. This is in clear violation of Section 27 of the constitution which guarantees the right to access sufficient water and the Water Services Act that guarantees everyone the right of access to basic water supply and that water service institutions must take reasonable measures to realise these rights.
The DA demands accountability from Mopani District leadership. We call on the municipality to brief the public on the project timeline for remaining phases, ensure the completion of outstanding infrastructure and conduct a forensic audit into how funds allocated to the Mametja-Sekororo water scheme have been spent.
The People of Sekororo deserve better, because water is not a luxury it is a basic human right. We will continue to raise this matter in Council until sufficient water service delivery is restored.
