DA reports sewage crisis and illegal closure of access road in Lebowakgomo

25 Aug 2025 in Press Statements

The DA in Lepelle Nkumpi Municipality will write to the Acting Municipal Manager, Mr Aphiwe Mananga, to urgently remove the illegal barricade on an access road and address the large sewage spill in the Habbakuk residential area in Unit E, Lebowakgomo. The DA will also report the municipality to the Green Scorpions for the sewage spill that is negatively affecting residents.

These issues come as a result of a resident who allegedly illegally invaded municipal land situated above a major sewer pipeline and barricaded an access road in front of stand number 30, blocking access to residents at stands 155, 136, 165, 134, and 111.

This illegal cordoning off of the access road has also made it impossible for Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) to maintain the sewer pipeline, which has been spilling into resident’s yards and flowing into nearby streets, posing a serious health hazard for residents. These issues have been raised repeatedly by residents in the area and their complaints have fallen on deaf ears. It is unacceptable that the municipality allows the illegal barricading of this access road and a sewage spill that infringes on residents rights and violates environmental laws to continue unresolved.

Mr Mananga must ensure that the municipality holds those responsible for this illegal occupation of municipal land accountable, urgently removes the illegal barricade, restores access for residents and ensures that the sewer pipeline is repaired and maintained.

The DA will continue to fight for the dignity and rights to a safe, clean and healthy living environment for residents in Lebowakgomo. We will continue to monitor the progress with regard to this issue until it is resolved.
