The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mogalakwena has written  to the Municipal Manager, Morris Maluleke, calling for immediate intervention in the tardy response time to address sewage complaints.

Residents in Wards 31 and 32 have been forced to endure hazardous living conditions due to prolonged and unacceptable delays by the Technical Services Department to effectively address sewage complaints.

Continual blocked manholes in the streets of Mokopane result in sewage spills into residents’ gardens and homes; an incident in Malva Street was reported two months ago and has yet to be addressed. ( See photos here and here)

These unacceptable delays not only contravene basic service delivery obligations according to the Municipal Systems Act (32 of 2000), the Municipal Structures Act (117 of 1998), and Section 24 of the Constitution which collectively obligate municipalities to deliver services effectively, efficiently, and in a manner that upholds human dignity, but also violates residents’ constitutional rights to a safe and healthy environment.

The DA views the current state of neglect as a direct result of poor internal management and a lack of urgency in addressing basic infrastructure breakdowns.

The DA further demands an investigation into the cause of delays and the implementation of a response system that prioritises urgent health and sanitation-related complaints from residents.
