The DA will write to Waterberg District Municipality Municipal Manager, Preciousstone Raputsoa, demanding the urgent refurbishment of the dilapidated Waterberg District Municipality Abattoir in Modimolle. The current state of the abattoir has raised serious concerns regarding unsafe working conditions

During a recent oversight inspection at the abattoir, the DA noted that the building is in a severe state of disrepair, parts of the ceiling have collapsed, bathrooms are not working and windows are broken. View photos here, here, here , here and here.

The facility has a lack of crucial equipment needed in the abattoir.  The abattoir is also severely understaffed and sometimes staff members work until the early hours of the morning, further increasing the risk of workplace injuries and working conditions that are unsafe.

The abattoir plays an important role in the community and the municipality’s neglect and mismanagement has seen it lose clients and has affected its competitiveness.

Municipal officials must be held accountable for these failures, they have a responsibility to ensure that the abattoir meets structural requirements, hygiene and workplace safety standards, while ensuring it is a sustainable operation.

The DA will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the facility is refurbished, equipped and capacitated to finally benefit communities within the Waterberg District.
