Allow us to bury our loved ones with dignity”: DA Calls for urgent action from GTM
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) will submit formal questions for reply regarding the shocking condition of the road in the communal village of Maweni leading to the local graveyard.
The road has deteriorated to such an extent that it undermines the dignity of the community, and of the deceased when funerals take place. Deep furrows, some more than a metre deep, run through the road, making it almost impossible to traverse safely – let alone with dignity.
See here.
For the past five years, no maintenance has been carried out on this busy access route. The village headman, Mr Maweni, has on numerous occasions requested the ANC ward councillor to ensure that the municipality attends to the road, but these pleas have been ignored.
It is unconscionable that roads are suddenly tarred or graded when politicians or dignitaries are buried, yet impoverished and vulnerable communities such as Maweni are left to bury their loved ones under undignified and unsafe conditions.
The DA will continue to fight for the dignity of the people of Maweni. Communities across GTM deserve ethical governance that puts the needs of residents first — especially those in vulnerable and historically neglected areas.
In the upcoming local government elections, the people of GTM, including Maweni, will have the opportunity to vote for ethical governance that places community dignity and service delivery first under a DA-led administration.
