The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo welcomes Cabinet’s announcement of its support for the formal designation of the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zone (FTSEZ), but cautions that its success will depend on clean and accountable implementation by the ANC-led Limpopo Provincial Government.
The FTSEZ is well positioned within the mineral-rich Bushveld Complex, between the existing Samancor and Lion ferrochrome smelters.
The DA supports credible projects that drive economic growth, create jobs and expand opportunity. However, Limpopo cannot afford another project like the controversial Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ), which has been undermined by corruption and failed implementation.
Limpopo desperately needs economic growth. Our broader unemployment rate stands at a shocking 46.1%, according to the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey.
ANC governance has stunted Limpopo’s growth despite the province’s mineral, agricultural and tourism potential.
We will exercise rigorous oversight and hold the provincial government to account to ensure that the FTSEZ does not become another failed project, and that it delivers on its promises.
If properly managed and implemented, the FTSEZ has the potential to unlock investment, drive industrialisation, stimulate economic growth and create jobs in a province that urgently needs both growth and opportunity.
