The Democratic Alliance calls on the Speaker of the Limpopo Legislature, Makomo Makhurupetje, to present a detailed report of the  alleged break-in at her offices in the Limpopo Legislature on 8 July 2026 in Lebowakgomo to the Oversight Portfolio committee on 15 July 2026.

Information of the break-in at the Legislature was shared and discussed during the Whips meeting earlier today; no statement by the Speaker was released in this regard.

We are concerned that a break-in at a national key point, despite a comprehensive and recently upgraded security system, including security guards and members of SAPS, secure smart doors and surveillance at multiple points seemingly went undetected whilst in progress.

The Limpopo Legislature has been embroiled in controversy and scandal  since the election of the Speaker and her questionable appointment of Dr. Timothy Maake as the Secretary including:

  • The purchase and alleged subsequent sale of the Speaker’s vehicle
  • Increased irregular and wasteful expenditures, including the R1.8 million spend on cancelled plane tickets and accommodation
  • 5 million payment to Talane and Associates, a law firm with family ties to Dr. Maake

The timing of the break-in, just before the secretive forensic report is to be presented to the Oversight Portfolio Committee  is dubious and indicative of the Speaker’s involvement in alleged maladministration.

We will not allow the People’s House to deteriorate into  a looting opportunity for  shifty bureaucrats and unscrupulous cadres and reiterate our call for the urgent establishment of an Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the malpractice which occurred under the Speaker and Secretary’s tenure.
