The DA in Limpopo extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the Grade 7 learner who passed away yesterday after being electrocuted at Mokutupi Primary school. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the deceased learner.
This regrettable incident reportedly occurred during a lunch break, next to a mobile classroom and highlights the need for the Limpopo Department of Education to prioritise infrastructure maintenance at the province’s schools. There should never be a scenario in which learners are exposed to live electric wires while on school premises.
While the exact circumstances of the accident remain unknown, the DA calls on the department to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into this tragic death. This investigation should include, but not be limited to, the circumstances of the accident, compliance with school maintenance regulations, and the condition of the electrical infrastructure of the school at the time of the accident.
Education MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya and her department have a legal obligation to maintain school infrastructure. The safety of learners needs to be prioritised, and accidents like this should be prevented through a stringent compliance to safety measures.
