Limpopo Public Works fails to fix D2474 and D2167 roads for 18 years

The DA calls on MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene, to urgently fix the D2474 and D2167 in Levubu, honouring a commitment made to the Levubu Community in 2008.

The two roads are in a state of serious deterioration and have become a danger to road users. The roads are in need of urgent repair to prevent further damage to the subsurface and foundation. View photos here, here and here

The D2474 and D2167 were used as detours in 2008 when the Lotanyanda bridge on the R524 collapsed. Although the bridge was rebuilt in 2010 the two roads were never repaired, despite sustaining extensive damage by heavy traffic during the two years that all R524 traffic had been re-directed through Levubu. The then MEC of Roads and Transport presented a plan to resurface the tarmac after the opening of the bridge, but this never happened.

The DA has received a letter from the Agricultural Union in Levubu and complaints from other stakeholders, pleading with RAL and the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure to fulfill the promise that was made in 2008 and prioritise repairs to both roads.

The two roads are of great economic significance in the area and are key to farming activities. The failure to maintain the roads is hampering local economic development and the accessibility of services for residents.

The DA finds this continued silence and inaction unacceptable and calls on MEC Rachoene to provide a clear and immediate response regarding the status, timeline and future plans for the D2474 and D2167 roads.

The DA cares about the safety of road users and is committed to ensure that residents have access to provincial road infrastructure that is safe and supports economic development. The affected residents of Levubu deserve more than empty promises.
