- The Limpopo Department of Education must address weaknesses in examination irregularities and ensure compliance with court ruling.
- MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya and her department must ensure accountability and use this judgement to strengthen examination integrity processes.
- The DA is committed to ensuring procedurally fair processes that ensure the integrity of examinations and will monitor this matter until it has been fully addressed.
The DA in Limpopo calls on Education MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya to address weaknesses in how examination irregularities and misconduct are investigated and ensure compliance with the court ruling regarding the withholding of matric results of learners who were accused of group copying.
This follows the Limpopo High Court setting aside the findings against 50 learners from Baphuteng Senior Secondary School and ordering that their results be released.
The decision to withhold these results for two years has had potentially far-reaching impact on the former learners involved, and could have prevented the accessing of tertiary education, employment opportunities or simply progressing with their lives.
While it is important to protect the integrity of the National Senior Certificate and to tackle examination irregularities, it is also important to ensure there are robust systems to ensure lawful investigations and processes that protect learners from protracted and unfair processes.
Lerule-Ramakhanya and her department carry a serious responsibility to ensure that any finding of examination misconduct is based on credible evidence and reached through a lawful and fair process. The department must now ensure it uses this judgement to strengthen examination integrity processes to ensure credible exam processes in Limpopo.
The DA is committed to ensuring procedurally fair processes that ensure the integrity of examinations while protecting the interest and future of our learners. We will continue to monitor this matter until it has been fully addressed.
