The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo will write to the Makhado Municipality Acting Municipal Manager, Mr KM Nemaname, to register our concern over the quality of work done on the Xitacini to Jiweni Access Road.

The road construction was started in 2017 with phase 1 and 2 being completed between 2017 and 2020. The road is already riddled with potholes as well as large cracks. It doesn’t resemble a recently constructed road. See photos here, here, here and here.

The Valdezia Xitacini to Jiweni Access Road is funded out of the allocation of the Municipality’s Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG). In the 2019/2020 financial year R1.1 million was allocated to complete phase 2 and R6.1 million was allocated for phase 3, after which a further R18.4 million was allocated for phase 3 in 2020/2021.

The DA has previously raised the matter with the Municipality’s Director of Technical Services, where we highlighted our serious concerns over the quality of workmanship, the condition of the road currently and the use of the same engineers for phase 3 that is currently underway.

We have also approached the Public Protector over this matter and the response outlined some information from the report of the municipality including that the road may be under-designed and that the municipality had been requested to provide specifications, design report, drawings and full test results.

It is unacceptable that the road that is being built at considerable cost to the municipality is in such a shocking state so soon after construction. The people utilising the road deserve a good quality road and the DA will continue to raise our concerns until they are addressed.
