The DA has given Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), Executive Mayor and her administration ,14 days to address the escalating water and sanitation crisis in Marble Hall and to communicate with residents. Should they fail to do so, we will request constitutional interventions as it is clear that SDM is incapable to deliver their mandate to provide water and sanitation services.
This follows the municipality’s flagrant and wilful neglect of a growing public health emergency in Ward 7 of Marble Hall. Despite multiple formal requests, documented proposals, and direct engagements from the DA, the municipality has failed to act, leaving residents exposed to life-threatening conditions.
Some of the issues include:
- 29 hectares of farmland contaminated by raw sewage due to infrastructure collapse, despite a haphazard clean-up by SDM
- Residents hospitalised with E. coli infections from sewage contamination
- Complete sewage treatment facility breakdown with raw waste potentially flowing into river systems
- Non-functional hydrants due to inadequate water pressure, compromising emergency services
- Persistent sewage spills flooding residential properties with no adequate response
Despite multiple formal requests, comprehensive documentation, and proposed solutions submitted by the DA, the SDM Executive Mayor and her team have:
- Broken explicit commitments made to residents at public meetings
- Ignored three formal follow-up communications spanning over weeks
- Failed to attend the promised meetings with community representatives
- Refused to provide alternative meeting dates despite urgent public health concerns
- Shown complete disrespect for rates and taxpayers who fund their salaries
Executive Mayor Bahula and her team are living lavish lifestyles, completely disconnected from the desperate plight of residents. The DA will not allow this injustice to continue. Marble Hall deserves better.
