DA oversight of pollution in Limpopo towns prompts Minister Creecy to act

Issued by Beyers Smit MP – DA Political Head for Mountainsview Constituency
08 Sep 2022 in Press Statements

The DA exposed blatant pollution of the environment and crucial water sources in both Mogalakwena and Lephalale by local authorities during recent oversights by the DA’s Shadow Minister on Forestry Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) Dave Bryant and Member of Parliament in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for Limpopo and Political Head for the area, Beyers Smit. Criminal charges were laid against malfeasant officials and the Minister of DFFE was informed.

We welcome the fact that Minister Creecy took heed of our call for immediate intervention.

On 6 & 7 September 2022, Environmental Management Inspectors were dispatched to Mokgalakwena and Lephalale to conduct an oversight of the longstanding pollution.

The communities of Pholapark, Mahwelereng, Sekgakgapeng, Parkmore, Ga-Michielle, Mokopane and Lephalale’s human rights, health and dignity have been violated for too long now.

The DA will closely monitor the processes that follows to ensure that justice prevails for the people of Mogalakwena and Lephalale.

The DA is the only party that proactively fights pollution caused by the negligence of municipalities and we will continue to fight for a safe and healthy environment for all communities.
