The DA in Maruleng Local Municipality condemns the senseless shooting of the ANC Ward 10 Councillor, Tshegofatso Mokgahla, on the 1st of September 2024 along the D21 road between Mahlakung mall and Sekororo hospital.

According to the available information, it is alleged that Cllr Mokgahla sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment in hospital after the attempted assassination. The motive for the shooting is still unknown.

These kinds of incidents remind us that crime and violence remain one of the burning challenges in our communities, as the shooting of councillors is becoming a crisis and a disturbing trend in our municipalities.

The DA in Maruleng wishes Cllr Mokgahla a speedy recovery. The shooting must be condemned in the strongest terms possible and we urge law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this violent incident are swiftly brought to justice.

This incident should also serve as an unfortunate reminder to Mayor, Tsheko Musolwa and senior municipal management to intensify local government efforts to strengthen and complement crime prevention strategies. Keeping our communities safe is the cornerstone of local development and economic growth.
