The DA in Limpopo congratulates the learners who sat for the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations and improved the provincial pass rate to 85.01%, a significant increase from 79.54% in the previous year. We wish these learners great success in their futures.
This year’s results represent a 5.5% increase and are a significant improvement on some of the poor results the province has achieved in the past. A total of 41370 learners (44.3%) managed to achieve bachelor passes and this represents an increase from the previous year, while 24591 (26.3%) and 13500 (14.4%) achieved Diploma and Higher Certificate passes, respectively. The performance of Special Needs Education Learners should be commended, of the 191 learners who wrote, 174 passed, with 98 learners (51.3%) achieving bachelors passes.
It is encouraging that 3 schools in the province have managed to achieve a 100% pass rate from 2020 to 2024 , however it is a cause for concern that 9 schools in the province achieved less than a 40% pass rate and Morokalebole Secondary school is the only school to perform below 40% over a 5 year period. It remains worrying that the number of learners enrolled for Mathematics and Physical science remains low. A total of 41 239 learners wrote Mathematics and only 69.2% achieved at 30% and above while 34 645 learners wrote physical science and only 77.3% achieved at 30% and above.
Despite the upturn in the province’s results Limpopo’s Education system still faces historical challenges such as staff shortages, poor school infrastructure, inappropriate sanitation, learner dropouts, overcrowding, insufficient scholar transport, underqualified teachers, mismanaged school nutrition programme and insufficient support to learners. These all need to be addressed to ensure continued improvements in Limpopo’s results.
MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya and the province’s education department must now make sure that Limpopo’s focus is on the priority areas highlighted by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube, such as expanding access to quality early childhood development, improving teacher support and development in the foundation phase, improving post provisioning for the foundation phase, strengthening curriculum delivery in the foundation phase and protecting teaching and learning time. Lerule Ramakhanya must also monitor the 68 schools in the province that achieved less than 60% pass rate.
We would like to congratulate the Limpopo matriculants who qualified for entry into tertiary education, and we would also like to urge the matriculants who did not obtain the required results to take opportunities to improve their results. We are committed to ensuring that every learner in Limpopo has the opportunity for a bright and successful future.
