The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo strongly condemns allegations made by the local community of Marble Hall regarding rampant nepotism at Limpopo Government’s Tompi Seleka Agricultural College. The DA will ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated, brought to the attention of the Agriculture and Rural Development Portfolio Committee, and that consequence management is applied should the allegations be substantiated

This follows a visit to the communities surrounding the College, who allege that siblings, family members, and friends of staff in positions of authority at the College and beyond have been irregularly employed. In one instance, it is alleged that a Human Resources official was part of a panel that interviewed his own sibling, who was subsequently appointed.

In September last year, the community protested against ongoing nepotism, leading to an agreement with the College management that low-level menial positions would be reserved for members of the local community.

However, management has since reneged on this agreement, as some appointees to these positions have reportedly been recruited from as far as Vhembe and now reside in College housing.

The community has also accused the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s provincial office of similar nepotistic practices, alleging that wives of employees within the department have been irregularly appointed. In one instance, it is claimed that a wife was appointed to the same department where she reports directly to her husband. Additionally, some appointees are alleged to have close ties to the current acting Head of Department (HOD).

Beyond the legitimate grievances raised by the community, the Democratic Alliance strongly opposes the continued practice of nepotism. As we work through the Government of National Unity (GNU), of which the DA is an anchor partner, we remain committed to building a capable and competent state that serves the interests of all South Africans.
