The DA in Thabazimbi calls upon the municipality to accept the proposal from a mining group to take over the incomplete water project as part of their Social Labour Plan Programme.
The R67 million project approved by the Department of Water and Sanitation, to replace 7km of pipeline from the pump station to Thabazimbi town was implemented in 2022.
The project has been hamstrung by political instability from the onset and the firing and re-hiring of contractors during a period of parallel councils.
Iceberg contractor was paid R8 million as well as R800 000 for standing time and laid 1km of pipeline in a trench.
In June 2025 they voluntarily terminated their contract and according to the Project Management Unit, the municipality accepted the termination, despite receiving payments of R8.8 million.
The DA will further request an investigation into these payments.
The residents of Thabazimbi and Regorogile continue to suffer water shortages for days on end while this vital project for improved water supply remains incomplete.
There seems to be no urgency from the Municipality to ensure the successful completion of this project.
