The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo notes the declaration of flood-affected areas in the province—and other parts of the country—as a National Disaster following the severe flooding in February. We will closely monitor the application of relief funds to ensure they are used transparently and effectively, safeguarding against misappropriation
The DA Leader and Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, recently visited the Thabazimbi area, one of the hardest-hit regions in Limpopo, and called for the declaration of a State of Disaster. This was to expedite resource mobilization, enhance interdepartmental coordination, and streamline the government’s response to the extensive damage to property, infrastructure, and essential service delivery—including the farming sector.
Under the Disaster Management Act, National Government and Provincial Executives are required to implement a multisectoral rehabilitation plan to address the effects of the disaster. Additionally, each organ of state is required to submit progress reports to ensure transparency and accountability.
The DA in Limpopo, we will ensure that the newly established Limpopo Portfolio Committee on Disaster Management exercises its mandate and ensures that the rehabilitation efforts result in a swift and full recovery for affected communities.
