The DA will write to the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene , demanding answers on the (R529) incomplete bridge at Dzumeri and its prolonged construction that seemingly resulted in a vehicle being washed away on Monday due to heavy rainfall.

This bridge was washed away in February 2025 after heavy rainfall in the area and the bridge is still not repaired. The MEC visited the construction site recently amid concerns around progress and the quality of work on this project, and a week later a vehicle has seemingly washed away. This recent incident highlights the need to complete the project, as the incomplete bridge and the detour pose a serious risk to road users, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. The DA has previously raised concerns around the incomplete bridge and temporary detour that was established, and that it would pose a risk when it starts to rain and motorists would not be able to use it. We had also emphasised the need for urgency in ensuring that the bridge be repaired before the start of the rainy season.

The R529 is also a main connection road between Tzaneen (R71), Giyani, Malamulele, Thohoyandou and Punda Maria. The incomplete repair work on the bridge poses a negative experience for tourists on their way to the northern Kruger National Park, negatively affects economic activity in the area and affects community members attending work and school.

The DA will ask MEC Rachoene questions around the bridge’s completion date, progress and the total cost of this project. The People of Greater Giyani deserve appropriate infrastructure that facilitates socio-economic activities
