09 Mar 2026 in Press Statements

The DA handed petitions to the mayor of Bela Bela Local Municipality, Gloria Seleka, and Mayor of Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality, Anna Mboweni, to demand drastic improvements to the service delivery in both municipalities. View photos here and here.

Before the handover, the Municipal Councils took resolutions to approve the yearly adjustment budget of the municipalities. With funds being reprioritised within the current financial year, it is in the towns interest that it be spent on service delivery and not on wasteful exercises.

The petitions were launched in 2025 and were supported by more than 2000 residents in Bela Bela and 6200 residents in Modimolle-Mookgophong.

The public supported the DA’s demands that the following service delivery issues be addressed:

  • Water provision, maintenance and monitoring must improve.
  • Sustainable power supply and shorter repair timeframes.
  • Streetlights and Traffic lights must function.
  • Potholes must be fixed.
  • Address Sewage spills, illegal dumping and non-compliant landfill sites that threaten public health
  • Stricter measures be implemented to address illegal dumping and sewerage pipes that overflow in residential areas.
  • That municipal bylaws be enforced fairly.
  • Improved communication between residents and the municipality.
  • That street signs that are missing/ damaged be replaced, and road markings are painted.
  • That ratepayers experience satisfactory customer services regarding account queries.

While there has been some progress to date, we demand that concrete and implementable plans for sustainable water, electricity and sewerage services are formulated, and be in line with existing legislation.

It remains the responsibility of these ANC run municipalities to provide sustainable services and the DA has requested Mayor Seleka and Mayor Mboweni to have the petitions tabled at the next ordinary municipal council meetings and to supply feedback on it.

The petitions reflect the collective resolve of the communities of Bela Bela and Modimolle Mookgphong to demand accountability, transparency and substantive progress in municipal governance.

The DA is committed to fighting to ensure resident’s complaints and their needs are addressed and we will continue to raise every concern to ensure a better quality of life for the people of Bela Bela and Modimolle – Mookgophong.
