The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Polokwane welcomes the installation of solar-powered streetlights currently underway in Ward 39 of the City. This development follows the DA’s sustained pressure on the Polokwane Municipality energy Department for five years.
The DA consistently held the Municipality accountable by submitting complaints via the MyPolokwane Citizen App, engaging municipal officials, and demanding urgent intervention.
We first raised the urgent need to address widespread streetlight failures affecting the safety and security of our communities at the start of the 2021 administration.
On 13 February 2026 the MMC of Energy requested City Cluster Ward Cllrs to submit street names towards the Streetlight Maintenance Programme.
While we welcome the installation of solar streetlights , it should not have taken months and years of persistent pressure before meaningful action was taken, while anxious residents have endured dark streets, increasing risk of crime, road accidents and insecurity.
This demonstrates that determined oversight and advocacy can deliver results for residents.
The DA will continue to monitor the rollout of these installations to ensure they are completed efficiently and that all affected areas receive the attention they deserve.
