The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Modimolle-Mookgophong has noted the increase in the formations of youth gangs who go around communities carrying pangas, golf sticks and grass slashers and has laid a complaint with South African Police Service (SAPS) in Naboomspruit.

These youth gangs go around communities in several groups which tend to fight each other at times and have caused significant safety concerns for residents in the municipality. This gangsterism also threatens the safety of other learners and youth.

This youth gang activity also poses a risk to the future of these young boys who might land in jail for their continued acts of violence and conducting activities that are illegal. It is important to ensure that every effort is made to keep at risk youth out of gang related activities.

Youth unemployment, a lack of opportunities, poverty and drug use are all societal issues that have likely contributed to this increase in young boys forming gangs and terrorising their communities. The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality has also failed to effectively develop and implement programs that reduce the risk factors that may lead to youth gang activity.

The DA will engage with the parents of these minors to find ways of collaboaration to address this issue. We will also involve social workers and SAPS to ensure safety and crime prevention in our communities.

The DA is committed to ensuring the safety of communities in Modimolle-Mookgophong and will continue to fight for more visible policing and any other interventions that assist in curbing gangsterism and criminal activity in the municipality.
