The DA will today file a complaint with the Environmental Management Inspectorate (Green Scorpions) against the Mopani District Municipality and Giyani Municipality for failing to repair a main sewage pipe that has been leaking raw sewage into the Section F residential area for five months. (See photo here)
The DA and the residents of Section F are particularly concerned about a frail elderly lady residing in house 374 whose whole stand is overflown with raw sewage.( See photos here, here and here)
The unbearable situation not only poses severe health risks to residents, but the nauseating stench diminishes their quality of life.
Despite a site visit to the spill by district and municipal officials, nothing has been done; lack of routine maintenance on aging sewage infrastructure results in such spills which have consequence on rate paying residents.
This situation is no longer a once-off service delivery issue, but rather points to ongoing sanitation infrastructure failures and inadequate maintenance by both Mopani District and Giyani municipality ; the continued sewage spills pose serious environmental and public health risks to residents and surrounding communities.
Where the DA governs, we ensure that our communities are not exposed to raw sewage, we ensure fully compliant wastewater treatment works, that plant assets are well-managed, and that there is a strategy in place to minimise risks and ensure long-term sustainability.
