17 Oct 2022 in Press Statements

The DA has filed a complaint with the Environmental Management Inspectorate (Green Scorpions) against the Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality over a sewage spill in Burgersfort that has gone unresolved for more than 5 years. View photos here, here, here and here

The sewage spill flows right next to the taxi rank and is negatively affecting neighbouring businesses. There is an unbearable stench in the town caused by the spill and it is a health risk to the taxi drivers, commuters, school children, workers and clients.

The sewage leakage poses a risk to the community and this pollution violates environment laws. During the DA’s oversight visit in the area cattle were seen grazing and drinking from the sewage.

The municipality’s failure to fix the sewage spill infringes on the residents’ right to a healthy and clean environment and this recurring sewage spill is also evidence of the municipality’s collapsing wastewater networks.

We will further write to the MEC for COGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu, to intervene as both the local and district municipality have failed the business sector and residents.

The DA is committed to ensuring the health of residents in our communities is not compromised by being exposed to raw sewage. The municipality cannot continue to put the health and safety of residents and animals at risk.
