The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has been vindicated by the Supreme Court of Appeal on Friday, 8 March 2024 when it dismissed the ANC’s application for leave to appeal against the finding of the Limpopo High Court ordering the reinstatement of Tokkie Swanepoel as the lawful mayor of the Thabazimbi Local Municipality.
When the High Court first delivered the judgment in September 2023, the ANC very quickly applied for leave to appeal, suspending implementation of the original court judgment and preventing Mayor Swanepoel and the coalition government from getting back into office.
This unnecessary move in trying to appeal a lawfully sound judgment has not only embarrassed the ANC, but also left them with a painful costs order.
Now that the ANC’s leave to appeal is dismissed, the High Court judgment that found Mayor Swanepoel and coalition government’s removal from office over a year ago was unlawful, the multi-party coalition is back in government, ready to reverse the damage caused by the ANC.
The DA looks forward to good governance returning to the communities of the Thabazimbi Local Municipality and is confident that Mayor Swanepoel will turn the ship around once again.
We are unapologetic in our quest to hold the line on the rule of law and stop the ANC from breaking our hard-earned democracy.
On 29 May 2024 voters have an opportunity to rescue Limpopo and South Africa from an ANC/EFF government which will continue to undermine the rule of law in their quest for power and self enrichment.
