The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo (DA) will write to and call upon Great North Transport (GNT) and its holding company and shareholder, the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA), to ensure that provision is made to pay all outstanding and future contributions owed to the pension and medical aid schemes of its employees—pending the finalisation of the current ongoing budget process.
We further call on GNT and LEDA to make use of available savings or reduce operational costs to ensure that all outstanding monies are paid, and that future contributions are made timeously.
The DA has been inundated with complaints from employees regarding GNT’s ongoing failure to pay over its contributions to their pension and medical aid schemes. In one instance, an employee alleges that non-payment led to the cancellation of their medical aid. In another, employer contributions to an employee’s pension fund have reportedly not been made since December 2024.
As we have previously reported, this troubling pattern is not new. GNT employees have endured the consequences of maladministration and corrupt governance for close on two decades. We await the finalisation of the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) investigation into the affairs of GNT and the identification of those responsible for wrongdoing and the near collapse of this important public transport entity.
In the interim, and pending the finalisation of government’s budgetary process, we expect the rights of GNT’s employees to be upheld and protected.
