The DA will submit written questions to the Legislature on the shutdown of a school due to a “scheduled” meeting of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU).
In a local media report, is stated that the Hans Masibe Primary School in Mapela Village- Mokgalakwena municipality will be closed today as a result of the SADTU meeting.
Parents were notified in writing on 13 May 2025 of today’s meeting; parents were further requested to inform scholar transport drivers of the closure “to avoid any inconvenience”.
To shut down a school for a whole day, deprives learners from Hans Masibe Primary as well as learners taught by teachers from other schools in attendance the right to learn. This is in conflict with the right to basic education as enshrined in Section 29 of The Constitution.
This unprofessional conduct of SADTU could have been mitigated by utulising a different venue that would not have disrupted a whole school during the middle of second semester exams.
The DA urges the MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya to investigate this incident and not to allow future disruptions of school days by SADTU.
The DA will ensure that the rights of children to a quality education is protected.
