The Democratic Alliance (DA) commends South African National Parks (SANParks) for its proactive leadership and decisive action in managing the recent flooding in the Kruger National Park (KNP), and thanks the Minister for Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Minister Willie Aucamp, for supporting these efforts.

The heavy rainfall and resultant flooding posed serious risks to visitors, staff, infrastructure, and wildlife. SANParks’ early interventions, precautionary road and camp closures, evacuations and consistent public communication have played a vital role in reducing the risk of tragedy during this period.

The DA further acknowledges the commitment and professionalism of SANParks staff on the ground, who have continued to work under difficult and often dangerous conditions to prioritise visitor safety while protecting one of South Africa’s most important conservation assets.

In line with DA policy, this requires:

  • Targeted investment in climate-resilient infrastructure, including flood-resistant roads, bridges, and stormwater systems in national parks;
  • Proper maintenance budgets to address existing infrastructure backlogs;
  • Modern early-warning, monitoring, and communication systems to protect visitors and staff; and
  • Clear accountability and coordination between SANParks and the national department to ensure rapid, well-funded disaster responses.

The Kruger National Park remains a major attraction, and we encourage all visitors to work together with SANParks during this challenging period by following safety guidelines and road closures for everyone’s protection.

Ignoring warnings, bypassing barriers, or attempting to cross flooded roads places lives at unnecessary risk and diverts emergency resources away from genuine emergencies.

The DA calls on visitors to respect all temporary closures and safety signage, follow instructions from SANParks staff without exception, and exercise patience and caution as conditions continue to be monitored.

SANParks’ response during this flooding event demonstrates how effective leadership, preparedness, and infrastructure investment can save lives.
