The Democratic Alliance (DA) calls on the Mayor of Ephraim Mogale Municipality, Given Moimane, to intervene in the sewage crisis in Ficus Street and to hold officials accountable for the blatant neglect to maintain the sewage system.
For seven years now, the “Buffalo Inn” sewage leaks have been reported without any assistance or maintenance from both Ephraim Mogale and Sekhukhune District municipalities.
On the eve of the Human Rights Day celebrations, raw sewage flows down Ficus Street due to a neglected and blocked system. (See photos here, here and here)
Residents are forced to live surrounded by raw sewage, which violates their right to a clean environment.
The stench and unhygienic conditions also compromise their constitutional right to dignity, while raising health concerns for affected community members.
This blatant violation of human dignity is the direct result of the collapse of governance at both local and district level in our municipality.
The stench of ANC hypocrisy is overwhelming: while officials buoyantly celebrate Human Rights Month, Ficus Street residents’ rights are ignored.
The DA will continue our call for accountability and service delivery for communities and ensure that the rights entrenched in our Constitution are enjoyed by everyone, everyday.
