The Democratic Alliance (DA) demands that the Mayor of Lephalale, Aaron Mokgetle, account for why the permanent water pipeline project, scheduled for completion in October 2024, remains an incomplete shoddy mess. (See photos here, here and here)
Whilst a temporary pipeline was installed during the replacement of the main water pipe, it clearly does not have the capacity to meet the area’s water demand.
The temporary pipeline, similar in size to a residential hosepipe, cannot supply sufficient water to the industrial area and surrounding communities.
As a result, businesses are receiving little to no water, severely disrupting operations and causing huge financial losses.
Residents in Shandrani Flats and Mahlakung are also experiencing severe water shortages because the temporary pipeline cannot handle the demand.
Critical infrastructure projects cannot be allowed to drag on indefinitely with impunity for incompetent contractors and officials responsible for project sign-off.
Residents of Lephalale deserve reliable water infrastructure, not endless delays and temporary solutions that fail to meet basic needs.
The DA will continue to monitor the situation closely until affected residents have water in their taps.
