Mapungubwe Rugby match blunder disappoints supporters

The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo will write to the MEC for Sports, Arts & Culture, Jerry Maseko, to launch an investigation into the postponement and possible cancellation of the Mapungubwe Rugby match that was scheduled for Saturday, 7 March 2026.

The rugby match between the Vodacom Bulls and Lions is organised and hosted by the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and is meant to foster social cohesion while embracing Limpopo’s diversity and forms a broader part of the  Mapungubwe events.

Although the match was initially scheduled for 7 March 2026 and tickets already sold, the event has seemingly been postponed to 27 March 2026, without any reasons made public for the postponement.

Subsequent media reports have revealed that representatives of both teams had not been adequately consulted, alternatively no agreements were reached. Possibility that the match will be cancelled is evident from these media reports.

This blunder by the Department does not reflect positively on their otherwise good track record and has caused uncertainty on whether the event will actually take place.

The DA in Limpopo therefore calls on both MEC Maseko and the HOD, Veronica Mokgonyana, to take the people of Limpopo into consideration and to issue a media statement as to the true and correct status of this scheduled event.

The DA in Limpopo has always supported and encouraged events and initiatives by the Department that advance accessibility of sport to the people of Limpopo, however these blunders should be avoided and consequence management must follow against those officials implicated.

The DA will now continue to fight for full transparency and disciplinary action where necessary. The Premier and the MEC must ensure that justice is served, not quietly, but publicly, and without political protection. People of Limpopo deserve better than broken promises and shelved events.
