Polokwane municipality to blame for the violent service delivery protests

Polokwane Local Municipality is fully to blame for the service delivery protests in Polokwane and Seshego.

Some areas in Polokwane have been without a constant supply of water for more than 15 weeks without any sign of abating.

This is a clear violation of residents’ constitutional right to water.

The DA has been warning the Polokwane council for over 2 decades about the impending water crisis.

Since 2016 Mankweng residents were allowed to pay a flat rate for water and sewer services, regardless of how much water they consume.

Not only was this unsustainable, impractical, and unfair, but this arrangement come back to haunt Polokwane Municipality.

Frustrated residents of Seshego and other areas are now also demanding a flat rate for municipal services.

Whilst we understand the frustration of residents with the protracted water crisis caused by the lack of progressive planning by the ANC-led Council, this cannot come at the cost of residents’ other constitutional rights.

Blockading roads, threatening the public not to attend work or school and the burning of buses cannot be tolerated.

Damaging and destroying public and private property only create new challenges that divert funds from maintaining and upgrading water infrastructure

There is only one way to change our city for the better: vote out the ANC.
