Issued by Cllr Yolande Coetzee – DA Caucus Leader for Mogalakwena Local Municipality

The DA will write to the municipal manager, Morris Maluleke, to account for the poor state of the Mokopane cemetery.

An oversight following numerous complaints confirmed that the cemetery is not being maintained by the municipality. (See photos here, here and here)

During the oversight we were informed that there are no tools available to maintain the upkeep of the cemetery, including lack of protective clothing for workers against snakes in the grass.

The obvious lack of maintenance include:

  • Uncut grass that is high and bushy which makes graves inaccessible.
  • Fallen trees that cracked and destroyed tombstones; and
  • Fallen in graves.

The final resting place of loved ones is a sensitive matter and the state of the cemetery is unacceptable and shows a clear lack of respect by the ANC-led municipality.

We demand a clear plan from the municipal manager to restore this cemetery to its former glory.

We remain committed to being the voice for our voters and will keep the public updates on our progress.
