The Democratic Alliance calls for immediate national government intervention in the ANC-led Mogalakwena (Mokopane) Municipality.
In a concerning display of neglect, residents of Ext 19 in Mokopane have been without running water for 1 year and 8 months. Forced to take extreme measures, residents recently dug up and cut water pipes themselves, transporting water long distances using wheelbarrows and buckets.
This serious violation of basic rights highlights the ANC’s failure and inability to meet residents’ fundamental needs.
The Mogalakwena Municipality has experienced ongoing dysfunction and near collapse for nearly 20 years. According to the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI), the municipality’s “perpetual instability” results from deeply rooted factionalism within the ANC, which undermines effective governance and has even led to violence and fatalities among officials.
Provincial intervention under Section 139(1)(b) has proven ineffective, as factionalism has thwarted meaningful reform.
The Democratic Alliance believes that the national government has an obligation to intervene under Section 139(7) of the Constitution.
Where the DA governs, the people’s interests come first.
