DA oversight reveals the worst road in Limpopo – and possibly South Africa

Elias Motsoaledi Municipality together with its surrounding villages, has been left destitute for years and the DA calls on Premier Ramathuba to urgently intervene.  The road conditions in Limpopo have reached such catastrophic levels that residents can physically stand inside what was once a street. Entire sections have collapsed into deep trenches, turning vital community roads into dangerous pitfalls.

During a recent oversight visit to Sepaku Village in Ward 23 of Elias Motsoaledi Municipality, Cllr Johan Kotze and I engaged with the community and saw first-hand the horrific conditions residents are forced to endure. There is no water, no refuse removal and roads are so neglected that they may well be the worst in Limpopo, perhaps even in the country.  View photos here, here, here and here.

Water shortages in the area are now so severe that some residents go months without supply, if they ever receive it at all. Those who are fortunate enough to have boreholes sell water to desperate neighbours.

According to residents, the roads have not been maintained for more than a decade. They have deteriorated to such an extent that vehicles risk serious accidents, while pedestrians, especially the elderly and disabled, face life threatening danger simply trying to navigate them. Disabled residents are effectively trapped in their homes, unable to move freely without relying on others for help.

It may be a gravel road, but it serves a critical purpose such as getting children to school and workers to their jobs. Instead, entire sections of the community are being cut off because of the ANC’s failure to deliver the most basic of services.

With the 2026 Local Government Elections approaching, they will punish the ANC at the ballot box for years of neglect and empty promises. When asked about the whereabouts of their Ward Councillor, residents confirmed that he only appears before elections to mislead them with false assurances. Once again, the ANC in Limpopo has proven that it does not care about serving the people, but rather its own selfish political interests.

I will also raise this matter directly with the Minister of Transport and demand accountability from the ANC led Municipality. The people of Elias Motsoaledi deserve better, and the DA will continue to put their needs first.
